José Pariente Barrica 2021

Tasting: Verdejo, just like Chardonnay responds extremely well to being fermented and aged in oak. This example from Rueda, the heartland of Verdejo, is rich, textural, has heaps of breadth and body and is farmed organically. An intense and complex nose with spicy, smoke and balsamic aromas (anise and eucalyptus standing out). Medium-bodied, smooth and elegant on the palate. The wine is powerful, with great acidity and minerality, ensuring a long and lively finish.

La Mateo Tempranillo Blanco 2019

Tasting: Tempranillo Blanco is the white DNA variant of Tempranillo, discovered in 1988. Like many other grape varieties Tempranillo Blanco can make a range of different styles depending on how it is handled. This barrel fermented, barrel aged expression sees a much more textural and structured version of wine from the grape. Concentrated and full bodied, muscular with notes of lemon balm and lemon myrtle, ripe apricot and peach, lemon flower blossom, jasmine and carraway.

Tasting: Xosé Lois Sebio’s Viño de Encostas project focuses on fruit from old vines in vineyards that are farmed organically and biodynamically, often outside of traditional growing areas. Máis Alá is a powerful wine, made from Godello, the nose shows citrus blossom, spices, and minerals, backing a palate of concentration and muscle, but with elegance. It shows ripe stone fruits, grapefruit peel, honeydew melon and a crunchy acid drive.

The grapes for this wine come from an old hillside plot on top of an abandoned tungsten mine. Quintessentially Albariño, but with a little more breadth and texture, expressive toasted lemon, delicately ripe white apricot, driving acidity and a delicious saline finish.

Supernova Blanc 2021

Tasting: Tomeu Llabrés' Ca'n Verdura project aims to reinvigorate plantings of indigenous Mallorcan varieties that have lost ground on the island to French varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. An excellent example of indigenous variety Moll, the wine shows complexity through aromatic citrus, white peach and fine fennel and herbs.

Toubes 2018

Tasting: Viña Costeira make a range of wine from indigenous Galician varieties, across several of Galicia’s growing regions. Toubes comes from Ribeiro, the heartland of the Treixadura grape. Dense, rich and powerful, it has concentrated fruit with flavours of golden apple, honeysuckle, pineapple and patisserie notes from long lees aging.

Verdeja le Dicen 2020

Tasting: Verdeja is the local name for old, pre-clonal selection Verdejo in Castronuño and Toro, and while this wine shows plenty of Verdejo character this is clearly not a wine trying to be Verdejo from Rueda! Embracing Verdejo’s tendency towards oxidation, Esteban Celemín makes this wine in the traditional method of this region, with 1-2 days of skin contact and the inclusion of some raisined grapes. The result is a very highly concentrated, but totally dry, expression of Verdejo. This shows appealing ripe green herb (fennel, coriander, celery) notes intermingled with charred lemon notes on the nose, and the palate is dense with plenty of mineral acidity and citrus and stone-fruit notes

La Blanca Amfora 2021

Tasting: Produced by Vins del Tros in the far south of Catalunya, in the village of Vilalba del Arcs, their mission has always been to produce wines that represent the very essence of the region of Terra Alta. With skin contact employed and amphora fermentation and maturation, this is an outstandingly interesting orange wine. Un-fined and unfiltered it shows delicious, soft citrus fruit, wildflowers, and spices. Farmed organically with minimal amounts of added sulphur.
