Vinícola del Priorat is the last operational cooperative in Priorat, today’s incarnation was formed in 1991 from the last cooperatives in la Vilella Alta, La Vilella Baixa el Lloar and Gratallops.
Cooperatives formed a vital bridge between the 19th-21st centuries, post-phylloxera and post-war they allowed people to band together and survive. Under the guidance of Sandra Estevez, wine is made from 140 growers, with very low yields, old vineyards on licorella soils on slopes over 30% gradient.
Tasting: An example of the stylistic direction change that has occurred in Priorat over the past decade or so, producers are eschewing big extractions, and lots of new oak in favour of more restraint, elegance, and indigenous varieties. Full of plum, damson and black fruits with aromas of Mediterranean forest.

A powerful wine with poise and intelligence, black fruit, spiced black plum, cassis, a touch of fresh tobacco and molasses.
Tasting: This is a prime example of the stylistic shift that has occurred in Priorat from big, robust, extracted, oak aged reds to more refined, elegant wines with less or no oak. Medium bodied, aromatic dark cherry fruit and Mediterranean herbs supported by a palate of dark plum and damson, soft bramble fruits and slightly grippy tannins, supple and elegant wine all round.
Tasting: Ripe black fruit of cherry and blackberry with delicate hints of oak & a touch of vanilla. On the palate, the ripe fruit remains as the spicy character increases. Prunes and black plums, black cherry, vanilla, and a slightly earthy warming finish.
Tasting: Representing a tiny part of production in the legendary Priorat, white wines are somewhat in the shadow of the reds of the region, but wines like this prove they deserve much more recognition. Broad and textural, ripe green apple, nashi pear flesh, bouncy citrus and rounded soft acidity.
