Tasting: Raúl Pérez is considered one of the icon winemakers of Spain’s northwest, learning from one of the pioneers of the resurgence of Bierzo, Álvaro Palacios, Raúl’s name is now synonymous with Bierzo. Light bodied but showing Bierzo’s trademark structure, the nose is all violets and wet stone with a palate of intense black fruit and white pepper with deliciously chalky tannins.

From a single plot in Valtuille de Abajo called Las Villegas, this classic Pérez Bierzo wine has aromas of blackberries and aromatic herbs, with a palate that has crunchy acidity and flavours of juicy black hedgerow fruits, white pepper and mountain thyme.

From the La Vizcaína range, each wine is named after the single vineyard from which the fruit originates. La Poulosa is a 2 hectare vineyard that dates back to 1940. Bright and vibrant notes of red fruits, cherries, mountain strawberries and an underling cacao and black fruit note.

The Las Gundiñas plot shows marked individuality in this wine with fleshy and ample black fruit, graphite and thyme with silky mouthfeel.

Tasting: Raúl Pérez is considered one of the icon winemakers of Spain’s northwest, learning from one of the pioneers of the resurgence of Bierzo (as well as and more famously, Priorat) Álvaro Palacios, Raúl’s name is now synonymous with Bierzo. This wine is the pinnacle of Raúl’s production, from a one-hectare plot of mainly Mencía (the others are unknown and co-fermented). An exceptionally complex, persistent and structural wine that has aromas of blackberry and cherry, with flavours of just picked morello cherries, cassis, black pepper, cacao and aromatic herbs. Sublime.

The fruit for this wine comes from the village of Valtuille de Abajo, the nose shows aromas of honey, jasmine and grapefruit blossom, the palate, rich and sumptuous, but kept in check by delicate acidity, shows grapefruit citrus, buttered toasted bread, and hints of smoke, with an incredibly long finish.

Tasting: Yellow colour with some golden hints. Godello characteristics as citrus and minerality. Hints of quince jelly, tropical fruit, flowers and bitter herbs. Smooth and lifted. Made by the world known Raúl Pérez (this time with the aid of Rodrigo Méndez). Complex and intricate, with an excellent balance between fruit and oak. Long finish with nice minerality.

Tasting: On the nose it is predominantly citrusy, with hints of tangerine peel, white flowers, lime and ripe stone fruit. On the palate it is fresh and fruity, with an aftertaste of thyme.

Tasting: Light, amber-hued red. Nose shows cherry, raspberry, spice, smoke, flint and floral aromas. Very good chewy texture. Aromas of red berry, bitter cherry, spicecake flavors, licorice. Finishes long and floral, with the spicy note adding final cut. Full-bodied rose or light red...? What ever you prefer to call it!

El Rapolao shows its individuality through expressive red fruit spiced herb notes and distinctive minerality. The tannins are perfectly in balance and contribute to a structural yet velvety texture and length that refuses to go away!

Las Enebradas 2017

Tasting: Viñedos del Jorco is a project out of Cebreros in the Sierra de Gredos, a mountain range to the west and northwest of Madrid, becoming renowned for its ethereal expressions of Garnacha. Involved in this project of four friends Nacho, Flequi, and César, is legendary winemaker of the northwest, Raúl Pérez. Las Enebradas is one of the wines at the pinnacle of their stable, the fruit comes from a dry-grown vineyard, organically managed, and the vines average over 100 years old. An exceptionally powerful, but at the same time refined nose of red cherry and balsamic notes gives way to a silky palate of fresh loganberry, light morello cherries, bay leaf and a finish that will be with you a week later!
